ウイルス感染部門では、タイおよびわが国を含むアジア諸国で感染が繰り返されている血液媒介性感染症と蚊媒介性感染症を研究対象にNIHの研究者と共同研究を推進している。

蚊媒介性感染症ではタイを含む熱帯、亜熱帯地域に蔓延するチクングンヤを対象とし、原因ウイルスの疫学的、分子生物学的、および免疫学的基礎研究を推進する。血液媒介性感染症ではHIV感染症/エイズを対象とし、タイを始めとする東南アジア諸国に蔓延するHIV-1 CRF01_AE株のウイルス学的特徴、宿主液性免疫応答、薬剤耐性獲得機構などについての基礎的研究を推進する。
